Abstract
672,717. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 23, 1949. [June 26, 1948] No. 16714/49. Class 38 (v). In an iron, such as disclosed in Specification 671,057, and in which a rigid, self-insulated heating element 8, such as that of Specification 144,767, [Class 38 (i)], is embedded in the sole block 1 and surrounds a cavity 7 thereon, a thermal cutout 29 controlling the heater 8 is supported within the cavity entirely by a heater terminal 12 whereby the heating timelag of the cutout is reduced. The heater 8 comprises a resistance. conductor 9 insulated from a metallic sheath 10 by magnesium oxide (heat conducting material) 11. One heater terminal 12 has brazed to it a frame 30 to which a spring contact arm 33 and bimetal strip 35 are insulatedly fixed by a rivet 36, which connects the arm 33 to an exterior terminal 21. On overheating of the iron, arm 33 is deflected by the bimetal 35 acting through a setscrew 40 and breaks the heater circuit at contacts 31, 32.
