Abstract
672,712. Brushing and dusting skins. TURNER TANNING MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and HALL, C. May 23, 1950 [June 9, 1949], No. 15389/49. Class 138 (i). A machine for brushing and dusting skins comprises in combination a casing having at opposite ends thereof openings to permit the entrance and exit of a skin, at least one pair of co-operating rotatable brushes mounted one above the other in the casing so as to act on opposite sides of a skin, and a continuous or substantially continuous support for a skin extending across the casing from the vicinity of the entrance to that of the exit and passing between the brushes, the support being of open character and adapted to allow penetration therethrough of the bristles of the lower brush. The casing 1, Fig. 1, of sheet metal and/or wood has an entrance opening 3, exit opening 5 and outlets 24, 27 connected to a source of suction, suction passages being formed between the casing and baffles 22, 25. Extending horizontally across the casing between the entrance and exit openings is the support, for a skin 12, comprising a series of parallel rods or wires 8, Fig. 2, each tensioned by a nut 9 between fixed members 6, 7. Two pairs of horizontal brushes 10, 11 and 16, 17 driven by means not shown so that the brushes of each pair rotate in opposite directions are arranged within the casing so that the bristles of the upper brushes 10 and 16 extend down to the wires 8 while the bristles of the lower brushes 11 and 17 extend up and through the spaces between the wires. The wires are set obliquely to the axes of the brushes as shown in Fig. 2 so that channels worn in one pair of brushes will be offset laterally in relation to channels worn in the brushes of the other pair, so the pairs of brushes will between them brush and dust the entire surface of a skin passing therethrough without leaving any unbrushed ' strips. Between the pairs of brushes are arranged driven upper and lower skin controlling and feeding rollers 18, 19. The lower roller 19 is circumferentially grooved at intervals, as at 20, to receive the wires 8 and allow the roller to protrude through the support for contact with the roller 18, which may be of wood covered with felt, rubber or the like. Arranged in the entrance opening 3 is a pair of skin controlling and feeding rollers 13, 14 of which 14 is positively driven so that 13 is driven by friction. Sloping tables 15 and 21 are provided at the entrance and exit openings respectively.
