Abstract
672,590. Projectile fuzes. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Sept. 18, 1950. [Sept. 26, 1949] No. 22897/50. Class 9 (i). A safety device controlling the arming of a projectile fuze has a body 1 housing an obturator 2 which is retained by a keeper ring 3. The body 1 is crimped into a casing 5 which has a lower part 5a in which is inserted a sleeve 6 housing a detonator 7 covered by a perforated cap 8 over a wad 10, a plug 11 retaining the sleeve in the casing. Through the obturator 2 extends a passage 12 having an eccentric part 13. Extending through the base of the body 1 is an oblique passage 14, the passages 13, 14 being diametrically opposed relative to the axis of the projectile before arming. An annular inertia member 15 between the body 1 and the casing 5 is held by a spring 17 and is provided with a guide member 18 extending through an aperture 19 in the body 1. When the projectile is fired, the inertia member 15 recoils against the spring 17 and is guided in its translatory motion by the member 18 the end 20 of which moves along a groove 21 in the obturator 2, thereby rotating the obturator. When the obturator has turned through 180 degrees the passages 13, 14 are aligned so that flash from a nose fuze can pass to the detonator. The groove 21 has an undulating part 21a leading into a helicoidal part 21b beyond which is a blind part 21c, Fig. 2. Due to this form of the groove, the obturator is initially given a reciprocating movement before rotating through 180 degrees. When positive acceleration of the projectile ceases the end of the guide member 18 becomes locked in the blind part of the groove and the projectile is permanently armed. A waxed cardboard capsule 22 may be placed in the passage 13 to ensure gas tightness prior to arming.
