Class 122(v) [Also in Group XXVIII] A packing assembly for a packing chamber 22 defined by an inner cylindrical member 19, a surrounding cylindrical wall 21 and spaced end walls 23, 24 one of which is movable relative to the other, comprises a plurality of resilient packing rings 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, each having a reinforced body part 40 and a resilient annular lip 41, for engagement with the member 19 and faced against the direction of hydraulic pressure applied to the packing, rigid supporting rings 27, 30 alternated with the packing rings and means for securing all the rings together to form a unit of which one of the parts has a projection for preventing the unit being inserted incorrectly in the chamber. The rings are enclosed in a sleeve 31 having a projection 33 and a lantern ring 27 is supplied with grease through a fitting 26. The packing is secured within .a rotary swivel 18 screwed on the rotary body 7 of a well-boring plant, and a.bottom packing ring 29 projects below the sleeve so that the packing rings may be under axial compression when the swivel 18 is in its.working position. The projection may be provided on the ring 29. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the sleeve 31<SP>1</SP> is welded to a flange 60 and is secured within a chamber 22<SP>1</SP> by a screwed cap 51 provided with a grease connection 54 and an additional sealing ring 53 held in position by a spring 65.
