Class 23 In a centrifugal separator having an axially-displaceable piston 6 within the bowl 1, 2 for controlling the intermittent discharge of solids through peripheral apertures 4 in the bowl which is divided into compartments 40-43 by two sets of co-axial frusto-conical partitions 10-12 and 17-19, each set of partitions is secured to the bowl and the piston respectively, so that when the apertures are closed the complementary partitions abut at their largest diameter and when the apertures are opened by the piston the partitions associated therewith move away from the other partitions to define gaps therebetween and some of the partitions are provided with ports so that when the apertures are closed the liquid being treated is circulated in sequence from the inner to the outer compartment and substantially traverses the full length of each compartment. The piston is lifted to close the ports 4 by liquid fed to a chamber 34 from a pipe 31. The chamber 34 is exhausted through a valve 7 which is normally closed by the centrifugal forces acting thereon and opened by liquid supplied through a pipe 35. The discs 11, 17 and 19 have ports 28, 27, 26 respectively near their inner edges so that the clarified liquid may flow to a stationary discharge impeller 25. The periphery of the partitions may have corrugations, incurvations or notches to provide passages for the escape of the liquid as the sludge accumulates or with passages permitting a restricted flow of sludge to the outer part of the bowl.
