Abstract
670,957. Jointing by stamping. SOMVILLE, C. June 22, 1948 [Feb. 17, 1948 ; Feb. 17, 1948], Nos. 16718/48 and 16719/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXI] Making cycle frames.-In a method of jointing elements 1, 2, Fig. 3, having at least their end portions tubular, one element is positioned within the other in an enclosing die 3 and internal pressure is applied to the interfitting portions so that the internal tube undergoes permanent deformation whilst the outer tube is subject to elastic deformation. In one embodiment, as applied to a cycle frame, the ends of the tubes 14, Fig. 7, are assembled within sockets 15 and the whole is enclosed in a two-part die 23, 26, Fig. 14, held closed by a 2,000 ton press 25. The bores of all the tubes communicate so that liquid may be introduced throughout the frame by a nozzle 29, Fig. 13, having elastic packing 35 and passages 31, 33 which allow air to escape. When the system is full, a nozzle 28, Fig. 12, is pressed against the die by a hydraulic jack 27 to apply pressure of about 2000 kg. per square centimetre for the jointing operation. The end of the tube 14, Fig. 7, is sealed against the socket 15 by a plastic &c. bush 16 and projections 21 on the tube may be forced through holes in the socket. The internal pressure may be developed from mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, &c. means or a combination of such means, and the tube ends may be machined to a fluid-tight fit in the sockets.
