Abstract

670,879. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CROFT, E. H. March 20, 1950. [March 18, 1949] No. 7481/49. Class 38 (iii). A control system for an electric motor having a field winding 11 in series with the armature has provision for weakening the field in stages : in one of the stages a, part only of the field winding is shunted by a direct circuit comprising resistance 13 and inductance 14, said inductance having a value sufficient to limit the flow of circulating current in the diverted portion of the field winding in the event of a voltage surge on the supply to the motor, and in a further stage the previously diverted portion of the field winding is cut out of circuit. The application to a series-parallel control system comprising four motors is shown. The pairs of motors 10, 10a and 10b, 10c are each permanently in series and reversing switches 26, 26b are provided. The motors are accelerated by connecting the pairs in series and removing sections of armature resistance in succession. The armature resistance is then re-inserted to form a bridge transition circuit. In the full parallel connection, field'reduction in steps is obtained by closing contacts 62, 62b, then opening these contacts and closing contacts 63, 63b. A further degree of field weakening may be provided by closing contacts 62, 62b, 63, 63b, simultaneously. Contacts 65. 65b, are then opened and contacts 66, 66b, are closed.
