607,252. Control of D.C. motors. WHEELER, H. D., and MOSSAY, P. A. H. Jan. 29, 1946, No. 2893. [Class 38 (iii)] Varying field.-The speed of a shunt-wound or lightly-compounded direct-current motor is controlled by varying its shunt field excitation and means are provided to afford an intermediate stage of medium excitation when changing from full to weak field and vice versa. Full field obtains when a switch SW4 is closed, a relay 1 being energized to short-circuit both a resistor R in series with the field winding SH, and the coil of a time-delay relay 2, thereby open-circuiting a diverter resistance D. When the switch SW4 is opened the relay 1 is deenergized to place the resistor R in series with the winding SH, the connection of the resistor D across the field winding being delayed. Similarly, when the switch SW4 is re-closed, the resistor R is first short-circuited and later the diverter resistance is removed. In a modification, a resistance is connected in parallel with the series resistor R before the diverting resistance is removed when changing from weak to full shunt field.
