Abstract
1,266,335. Control of D.C. motors for starting I.C. engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 20 June, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 33622/68. Headings H2H and H2J. [Also in Division H1] A system for a starter motor 13 for an I.C. engine comprises means whereby the initial operation of the motor is effected with full field current but reduced armature current and thereafter with both full field and full armature current. Closure of a starting switch 21 energizes a composite relay 17 thereby immediately closing contacts 12. In this condition full current flows in the field 14 of the motorbut the armature current is reduced by virtue of a resistor 16 connected in shunt with the armature 13 by means of normally closed contacts 15. After a delay determined by a short circuited coil 24 on the relay 17 an armature 23 is attracted to the core 18 thereby opening the contacts 15. The shunt circuit of the resistor 16 is then opened and the full current flows in the armature 13. The resistor 16 may be comprised by the resistance of a lead.
