Class 5(i) Agricultural roots, forage, farmyard manure or like are chopped by rotated knives 12 against fixed knives 13, Fig. 3 (not shown), which throw the chopped material up a tunnel 14 provided with an endless conveyer bottom 16 which delivers it through an outlet 14 b to a (canvas) delivery shoot 15. the roots &c. deposited on a short endless conveyer 27 are further fed into the casing 6 of the knives by an upper spring- pressed driven roller 31 with propelling fins 32, which yieldingly engage the top of the roots on the conveyer 27. The machine is mounted on a chassis with wheels 4 which can be coupled by lugs 40 to a pickup machine to deliver the roots directly on to the conveyer 27 when the whole assembly is dragged along by a tractor coupled to the draw-bar 5. The pick-up machine may be as described in Specification 670,755. The feed-in roller 31 is mounted for large vertical movement in guide 34, the spring 36 allowing self-adjustment to the height of the pile of roots on the conveyer 27. A damping spring 38 is provided at the top. The tunnel conveyer 16 is kept clean by a rotatable brush 24 bearing on the lower run of the conveyer 16 outside the tunnel. An engine 41 on the chassis drives the knives 12 and the conveyers 16 and 27, but alternatively they may be driven from the power take-off pulley of the tractor. The machine can also be used in a stationary position without a pick-up machine or tractor, being held stationary by an adjustable groundengaging screw jack.
