Abstract

A compound of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/1> is obtained by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/2> with a compound of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/3> where one of the X and A is halogen and the other is O-alkali metal and in the case where X is halogen and the reaction is carried out in the presence of alkali, A may also be -OH. In the case where X is halogen and A is OH, the reaction may be effected in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate. Alternatively the same product may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/4> with a compound of the formula OH.CH2CH2-halogen in the presence of alkali metal carbonate and reacting the resulting halogen ether compound with an amine of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/5> An example is given of the preparation of b -dimethylaminoethylbenzhydryl ether hydrochloride. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2(5) of b -dimethylamino ethyl benzhydryl ether prepared by the alternative processes. Specification 585,994 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the preparation of compounds of the formula <FORM:0670570/IV (b)/6> wherein Ar and Ar1 represents unsubstituted aryl, alkyl substituted aryl, alkoxy substituted aryl, phenoxy substituted aryl, halogen substituted aryl, alkylamino substituted aryl and interlinked aryl, R is hydrogen and phenyl, Z may be O, S and NH, Y is a member of a class of hydrocarbon chains having not more than six carbon atoms consisting of an uninterrupted hydrocarbon chain, an oxygen interrupted hydrocarbon chain and R1 and R2 represent hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl of not more than six carbon atoms, morpholine, piperidine, pyrrolidine and substituted piperidine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
