Abstract

670,088. Hydraulic fluids. WAGNER ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 29, 1948 [Jan. 19, 1948], No. 30925/48. Class 69 (ii). A hydraulic fluid particularly suitable as a brake fluid comprises (a) 3-15 per cent by volume of an aliphatic glycol having 2-4 carbon atoms in the molecule, (b) 10-25 per cent of a mono- or diricinoleate of a glycol of the type mentioned under (a), (c) 10-24 per cent of 2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol and (d) 45-70 per cent of a low freezing point diluent. Suitable diluents are the propyl alcohols, the butyl alcohols, the amyl alcohols, methoxymethoxy ethanol, and the lower mono-alkyl ethers of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol or dipropylene glycol. The hydraulic fluid may also contain a small proportion of a corrosion inhibitor such as potassium, sodium or other alkali metal salts of fatty acids, particularly castor oil fatty acids, amine phosphates, nitrites, borates and other buffer materials. In the examples hydraulic fluids are described containing 2-methyl-2,4-pentane diol together with (1) propylene glycol, propylene glycol monoricinoleate, potassium ricinoleate and one of the following diluents: propanol, n-butanol, iso-butanol, methoxy-methoxy ethanol and the monoethyl ether of dipropyleneglycol, (2) ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monoricinoleate, monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol, diamylamine and phosphoric acid, (3) ethylene glycol, ethyleneglycol monoricinoleate, monoethyl ether of propylene glycol and sodium ricinoleate, or (4) 1,3-butylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol monoricinoleate, monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol and potassium ricinoleate.
