Abstract

Silylalkyl phosphonates have the general unit formula (I> <IMAGE> wherein each M is selected from a sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium or tetraorganoammonium cation, R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a benzyl radical, and R' is a hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms. The phosphonates may be used to inhibit metal corrosion in aqueous media and also to stabilise silica sols and soluble silicates, especially those having the general unit formula (III> <IMAGE> wherein M is as defined above, and a has a value of from 1 to 3. Compositions comprising compounds (I) and (III) may also be used to inhibit metal corrosion in aqueous media. In addition, when such compositions are added to an alcohol such as ethylene glycol in a corrosion inhibiting amount a corrosion inhibiting alcohol composition is formed which may be used, for example, as an antifreeze.
