Classes 7(ii) and 7(iv) In an ignition device for internal-combustion engines which includes an ignition cylinder 2 provided with a port 7 for entry of a portion of a usual charge of fuel/ air mixture from an engine cylinder .12 into the ignition cylinder 2, and an ignition piston 1 adapted to be moved in and to compress the the ignition cylinder portion of the charge therein and in a passage 8 in the ignition piston and by such compression to cause ignition of the charge portion when an engine piston 11 is in a desired position in the engine cylinder 12, it is arranged that the port 7 and passage 8 coincide at or near the moment of ignition so as to permit the products of combustion of the charge portion resulting from the ignition to pass into the engine cylinder 12 and ignite the remainder of the charge of fuel/air mixture therein. The operation of piston 1 is arranged to provide correct timing of the ignition in cylinder 12. The travel of piston 1 is limited by a screw 3 running in a recess 4 in the piston, the screw also serving to prevent rotation of the piston. The port 7 and passage 8 may be obliquely arranged, as shown, or each may comprise a vertical and a horizontal part. The apparatus may be used in an overhead valve engine, as shown, or a side-valve engine ; in the latter case the movement of the ignition piston is limited by screw adjustment of the tappet operating the cam and the ignition piston travels in the reverse direction from that shown. The apparatus may be used in place of the sparking plugs in engines designed for electrical ignition.
