Abstract
669,438. Centrifugal brakes. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Sept. 5, 1950 [Oct. 20, 1949], No. 27000/49. Class 103 (i). A centrifugal brake, particularly for the emergency braking of gas turbine starters, comprises a carrier 1, rotatable with the starter shaft, having pivoted in its bifurcated arms 2, three shoes 7, each of which has a pin 9 that engages a radially inclined slot 11 in apertures in the two side plates 10. When the carrier is rotating the pins 9 exert a force tending to rotate the plates 10 relative to the carrier 1 but are unable to do so owing to a pin 6 projecting from the arms 2 engaging a recess 13 in the plates 10. At a predetermined speed the pins 6 shear and the pins 9 can then move into the enlarged portion 12 of the slots 11. The shoes 7 may then move out centrifugally into contact with the drum 14 and brake the starter.
