Abstract
669,198. Variable-speed ratchet gearing. MASSON SEELEY & CO., Ltd. May 1, 1950 [April 29, 1949], No. 11466/49. Class 80 (ii). An annular driving member 1, oscillated by a toothed sector 5 and linkwork 6-8 from a rotating crank 9, is connected to a variably oscillated driven member 2 by two oppositely-acting unidirectional couplings each comprising a single spring-loaded roller 16, 17. As shown the oscillating driven member 2 has a collar 2' connected through a third uni-directional coupling, comprising rollers 13, to a cage 11 carried by a shaft 10 driving a roller 3 feeding strip material to a press. The roller 16 is disengaged towards the end of a feeding stroke (anticlockwise in Fig 4a) by a fixed striker 26 straddling the member 1 and engaging the projecting ends of the roller 16. The roller 17, operative to return the member 2 in a clockwise direction, is disengaged by a lever 18 pivoted in a recess in the member 2 and co-operating with a cam 19 on a control spindle 20 on which is mounted a pointer 21. Hence adjustment of the spindle 20, which may be locked by the handwheel 24, varies the extent of return of the member 2 and consequently the amplitude of the operative stroke. It is stated that the striker 26 may also be adjustable and alternative forms of uni-directional coupling may be employed. The Provisional Specification also describes a construction having an outer driven member and inner driving member and in which two rollers are used in one of the unidirectional couplings.
