Abstract

In the production of aluminium chloride by reacting pulverulent alumina with chlorine and carbon monoxide in the presence of alkali aluminium chloride, a ratio of 0.05-1 part of the latter per part alumina is employed. Alumina prepared by calcining aluminium hydroxide at below 1000 DEG C. so that it contains 0.5-3 per cent water is preferably used. Coarse grained material, particularly petroleum coke, is preferably added to the reaction mixture. The vapours from the furnace, prior to condensing the aluminium chloride, may be led over surfaces heated to about 180-300 DEG C. or through say, a coke filter to separate entrained alkali aluminium chloride and impurities. The alkilis aluminium chloride and coke discharged from the bottom of the shaft furnace used are recycled.
