Abstract

529,614. Magnesium and calcium oxides. GOUDGE, M. F. June 5, 1939, No. 16427. [Class 1 (iii)] Substantially dehydrated magnesia, of high purity containing traces of lime, silica, iron &c. is produced by calcining at 120D-1300‹C. in vertical or rotary lime kilns calcite rock matrix, e.g. Predazzites and Pencatites, containing brucite granules of distinctive scaly structure, and slaking with cold water. Hydration of the calcined brucite is minimized by keeping the temperature below 120‹C. Dry disrupted limepowder is air-separated and lime adhering to the magnesia granules which retain the distinctive structure is rapidly washed off with cold water. Screening, tabling, jigging &c. to remove coarser impurities is unnecessary for most good grade rock. Rotary drying at 400-500‹C. removes undesired hydration while 2 hours hot water washing secures complete hydration. Rock containing dolomite is calcined not above 1000‹C. to prevent dead-burning which causes abnormal hydration. Dead burning effects may be overcome by rotary drying the slaked product at 500‹C. and re-hydrating with cold water.
