Abstract
Hydrated magnesium silicate is obtained by reaction between a soluble magnesium compound and a solid material containing calcium and silica in the presence of water and at elevated temperature. The solid material may comprise calcium silicate such as Wollastonite or as produced by fusion of lime and silica or by precipitation of a calcium salt by a soluble silicate, or calcium magnesium silicate such as diopside or as produced by fusion of calcined dolomite and silica, or basic or acidic slags, or Portland cement, or a mixture of silica with either unburned limestone, calcite, dolomite, dolomitic limestone or magnesite, hydrated lime, or hydrated calcined dolomite. Silica or lime are added when necessary. The magnesium compound may be the chloride or sulphate or mixtures thereof. The resultant calcium chloride is washed from the product, but calcium sulphate is allowed to remain. Conditions may be arranged so that calcium silicate is present in the product, and sometimes iron and aluminium silicates are present. The reaction mixture is preferably agitated, and the reaction may be effected under pressure. The solid reaction materials are preferably finely ground. The product may be spray-dried, and pulverized. In examples, temperatures up to 500 DEG F. and pressures up to 500 lbs. per sq. in. are employed. Wollastonite may be initially ground to pass through a 325 mesh screen, or it may be fused, blown into a slag wool, and disintegrated by a fan type milling apparatus prior to treatment with the magnesium compound. The product is used for decolorizing oils and aqueous liquids, and has a high filtration rate.ALSO:Hydrated magnesium silicate for use in decolorizing oils and aqueous liquids and having a high filtration rate, and obtained by reaction between a soluble magnesium compound and a solid material containing lime and silica, may be produced in admixture with other compounds. Thus, if magnesium sulphate is employed, the product contains calcium sulphate. Or the reaction may be so effected that calcium silicate is present in the product. If for example, Portland cement is used as a starting material, aluminium and iron silicates will be present in the product.
