Abstract

Alumina is prepared from a hydrochloric-acid solution of any aluminous material by calcining the crystals of aluminium chloride obtained by saturating the solution with the gaseous hydrochloric acid resulting from a previous calcination. The aluminium chloride is calcined in a continuously working furnace, consisting of several storeys each of which is provided with an outlet, and the gases evolved from a particular batch are not conveyed to the aluminium-chloride solution until they contain sufficient hydrochloric acid. When an ordinary type of furnace is used, the issuing gases are passed through a condenser, in the first chambers of which a watery solution of hydrochloric acid is formed while acid substantially free from water remains uncondensed and is conveyed to the saturator.
