Abstract
312,726. Horsley, G. F., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. March 19, 1928. Aluminium sulphate.-Bauxite, clay, and other iron-bearing aluminiferous minerals are treated to obtain aluminium sulphate free from iron. The material may, for instance, be treated within a rotary kiln in countercurrent with a stream of gases containing sulphur trioxide or sulphur dioxide and oxygen at a temperature intermediate between the decomposition temperature of aluminium and ferric sulphates, having regard to the partial pressure of sulphur trioxide in the gases. For example a gas containing 7 per cent of SO, may be passed over crude bauxite at 600-750 C. When wet clay is used as initial material it is first dehydrated by the waste gases as it passes along the kiln. Alternatively the material may be treated if desired in a rotary kiln, with gases containing sulphur dioxide and oxygen at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of ferric sulphate, say at 450 C., and be then further heated, say to 650 C., to cause decomposition of the ferric sulphate and formation of aluminium sulphate. A catalyst such as iron to assist the conversion of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide may be added if necessary. Specification 163,348 is referred to.
