668,433. Measuring dust-content photoelectrically. ALPENLANDISCHER ZENTRALVEREIN ZUR FORDERUNG SCHOPFERISCHEN SCHAFFENS. Oct. 28, 1949 [Oct. 28, 1948], No. 27645/49. Class 40 (iii). Apparatus for measuring the amount of dust in an atmosphere comprises means for sending a parallel-sided beam of light through the dustladen atmosphere, and an optical system for collecting dispersed light in a plane normal to the path of the beam, and conducting it to a photoelectric cell actuating an electric indicator through an amplifier. As shown, the light from a source 1 is confined to a parallel-sided beam 5 by an optical system 3 and screens 4, being continuously interrupted by a rotating, perforated disc 9. Dispersed light is collected by an optical system 16 and directed to a photoelectric cell 6 feeding an indicator 8 via a tuned amplifier 7, the optical system 16 and the photocell 6 being rotatable in a plane normal to the path of the beam, through an angle 10. A concave mirror 2 may be placed behind the light source 1, and a plane mirror 17 facing it. A further optical system 19 allows for visual observation for coarse particles. The pulsations of the light beam may be produced by other methods, and the beam may be made to pass through colour or polarizing filters.
