Class 40 (3) A photo-electric smoke detector comprises a housing 1 into which smoke from compartments under examination is drawn through an opening, 2, two sides of the compartment being of light polarizing material 3 polarized in planes at right angles to each other and having a photo-electric cell 5 situated behind one side and a light source 4 behind the other. The photo-electric cell feeds a micro-ammeter 6 serving as a current responsive switch controlling a relay. Thus in the absence of the smoke more of the light from source 4 is able to reach the photo-cell whereas with smoke present sufficient will reach the cell to actuate a relay controlling an alarm.
