937,426. Testing cigarette filters photoelectrically. BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. March 28, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 12642/61. Class 40 (3). In an apparatus for testing a cigarette filter, cigarette smoke is passed with a puffing effect through the filter and photometric means are used to measure the density of the smoke before and after its passage through the filter. In the embodiment shown, a filter plug 1 to be tested, held in a holder 22, is placed in an airstream drawn through glass tubes 7 and 8 by a suction pump (not shown) and carrying smoke from an untipped cigarette 2, and the airstream is initially viewed by a first photo-voltaic cell 3 and by a second such cell 4 after it has passed through the filter plug. The cells are connected in opposition to a meter 18, and are illuminated by a lamp 5 mounted in a parabolic reflector 6 or associated with two plane mirrors (not shown). Initially the outputs of the cells 3, 4 are adjusted to balance when there is no air in the stream and the difference in obscuration of the cells when smoke is drawn through the filter is indicated by the meter 18 as a measure of the efficiency of the filter. To align the apparatus to known obscuration conditions, analogue masks (not shown) may be interposed between the light source and the cells 3 and 4, respectively. The cells 3, 4 may be selenium or other barrier layer cells, or photo-emissive or photo-multiplier cells may be used in conjunction with an amplifier feeding a meter or recording meter.
