Abstract
668,408. Masts. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and BOWLING, W. F. May 12, 1950 [July 7, 1949], No. 17943/49. Class 20(i) A mast 1 has two or more lateral struts 3 to each of which extend two stays 5 from fixed ground points 4, the direction of the stays 5 being such that the tension in each of them possesses a component horizontal and transverse to the strut 3 to which the stay 5 is attached, and opposite to the corresponding component in the other stay, i.e. the stays 5 lie on opposite sides of the plane containing the mast 1 and strut 3. In practice, four struts 3 are arranged on the mast 1 in quadrature, and the points 4 may lie between the struts 3 when viewed in plan, or in an alternative arrangement, see Fig. 4, the points 4 lie intermediate of, and in a plane at right-angles to, those struts 3 to which their stays 5 are attached. Two series of lateral struts 3 may be employed, and stays may extend between struts of each series, subject to the same requirements as hold for the other stays.
