Abstract

668,331. Making heat-exchangers. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. July 22, 1949 [Aug. 10, 1948], No. 19392/49. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XIII] A method of making heat-exchanger envelopes comprises bending metallic wires 10 to form a plurality of zig-zag loops of U-shaped form, laying these looped wires on a flat surface in spaced parallel relationship, bridging the space between them by metal strips 11, 12 arranged to lie alternately beneath and upon the wires respectively, fastening the strips to the base portions 13 and the stretcher portions 14 of the wires by welding or brazing, bending the strips 11 downwardly along A-A to form upper channel members 15, Fig. 2, and bending strips 12 upwardly along B-B to form lower channel members 16, and welding or brazing the assembled wires and channels to metallic plates 20 and 21 to form an envelope whereof the plates form walls and the leg portions of the wire loops constitute pin-like fins. The base portions 13 and stretcher portions 14 may also be attached to the plates by welding. Specification 668,270, [Group XIII].
