Apparatus for longitudinally slitting travelling webs of paper, cardboard or other material of the kind comprising one or more pairs of overlapping disc cutters supported on opposite sides of the web is characterized by separate and transversely displaceable mountings for the disc cutters of each pair and means for temporarily connecting the mountings so that the cutters can be adjusted transversely in unison without disturbing their cutting relation, the temporary connecting means being arranged so that it can be withdrawn to leave a free path for the web after the desired transverse adjustment has been effected. In the form shown, the upper cutter 18, which is freely rotatable, is mounted on a carriage 1 slidable upon a fixed shaft 2, and the lower cutter 7, which is driven from a shaft 10, is mounted on carriage 4 slidable upon a fixed beam 5 having a dovetail guide 6. The carriage 4 is provided with a plunger 31 which is movable into a bore 32 in the carriage 1, to connect the two carriages together, by means of a manually-operable crank 38 connected by a link 41 to the lower end of the plunger. When the plunger 31 is moved into the bore 32, the upper end of the link 41 rocks a pivoted member 44 to lower a spring- controlled wedge 45 so as to release the carriage 4 from clamping engagement with its guide 6, and, at the same time, the upper end of the plunger 31 moves a spring-loaded wedge member 34 upwardly from clamping engagement with the shaft 2 so as to release the carriage 1. The carriages are then adjusted transversely by means of a manually-operable pinion 15 which engages a rack 17 on the guide 6. The adjustment is facilitated by a graduated scale 47. After the adjustment has been made, the plunger 31 is withdrawn from the bore 32 and this causes the carriages to be re-clamped in position. If a web is present in the apparatus when it is desired to move the plunger 31 into the bore 32, the nose 31a of the plunger is given a chisel-like form so that it can readily penetrate between the slit edges of the webs. The cutter 18 is mounted in a yoke member 22 carried by a spindle 25 adjustable vertically in the carriage 1 and the cutter can be rocked out of engagement with the cutter 7 by means of a handle 23. The temporary connection may be formed by a geared or other drive between separate transverse adjusting means for the respective cutter mountings, e.g. each mounting may have a rack- and pinion adjustment, and a withdrawable gear or geared spindle be provided for operatively connecting the pinions. Other adjustment means, e.g. screw and nut arrangements, can be employed.
