Abstract
668,178. Glass manufacture. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 30, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8978/49. Class 56. [Also in Groups V and XXII] Moulding apparatus comprises a lower member 6 having a well 6' in which the moulding material is initially placed, and an upper member 5 which descends to force the material from the well into the mould cavity 20. The mould cavity lies between the ends of die members 16, 17 which are disposed in registering bores in members 5, 6 and initially the mould cavity lies partly in member 5 and partly in member 6. The die members 16, 17 are carried by cage members 13, 14 which are releasably secured together by pins 15. The material moulded may be glass, but the invention is described with reference to the moulding of thermosetting plastic material. In operation, after member 5 has descended to. fill the mould cavity (this being the position shown) and the hot material is plastic, the cage 13, 14 with its die members, is depressed, the mould cavity, with its article, being moved to a position wholly within the lower member 6. This movement shears off the excess material remaining in the well. The curing of the article is then completed whilst it is in the lower member 6. When curing is complete, the die members &c. are opened and the article (as shown a roller) is pressed out of the die cavity. Thermometers may be inserted at 9. The apparatus is shown disposed between the anvils 1, 2 of a press, pressure being applied through loose studs 3, 4. The cage may be depressed by means of levers or a screw mechanism. The studs 3, 4 may be releasably secured both to the anvils of the press and to the members 5, 6 in which case opening of the press raises 5, 13, 14 and 17 to eject the article; subsequently the pins 15 may be removed, and further opening of the press will separate the cage parts. There may be more than one mould cavity. Hollow cylinders with or without a transverse flange or with holes in the wall may be moulded, the holes being formed by removable cores.
