668,093. Centrifugal compressors. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. June 22, 1950. [April 22, 1949] No. 10783/49. Class 110(i). In an impeller for a centrifugal compressor of the type in which the impeller vanes each comprise a separate intake portion 11 and a main portion 10a, an insert 15 is accommodated loosely in a groove 14 extending substantially radially, the depth of the groove and the corresponding dimension of the insert decreasing progressively in a radially outward sense, the insert having a frictional engagement with an edge surface 11a which lies approximately in the plane in which it will be displaced as the result of vibration. Centrifugal force urges the insert 15 into contact with the surface 11a to provide frictional damping of relative vibratory motion between the vane portions 10a and 11. The insert 15 may be cf laminated synthetic resin bonded material or soft metal. To equalize stresses, the groove 14 can be arranged parallel to or inclined to the centre line of the surface 10b and displaced laterally from the centre line, so that the wall of the groove is thicker on the side having the greatest depth. The mairi portions 10a lie in planes either including or parallel to the axis of rotation. The intake portion 11 may be machined in a single piece or separately from one another.
