667,724. Gas-blast switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. March 24, 1950. [April 6, 1949] No. 7404/50. Class 38 (v). In an air-blast switch having its main blast valve adjacent to, and at the potential of, the arcing or blast chambers, the blast valve is controlled by means of a hydraulic transmission arrangement. Air is supplied to the arcing chambers indicated at 6 from a receiver 4 under the control of the main blast valve 25, which is controlled by a relay valve 21. The receiver 4 and a receiver 3 housing the valve 21 are maintained under pressure by the air supply from a reservoir (not shown) through a conduit 1 and a hollow post insulator 2. The valve 21 is opened by means of a piston 18 which is moved by a column of insulating liquid a conduit 17 and a further insulator post 8, when the column is moved by a piston 14. To open the switch, a coil 9 is energized to close an exhaust valve 33 and to open a valve 11, so as to admit compressed air from the conduit 1 to a cylinder 12. This causes the movement of a piston 13 and the piston 14 connected to it against a spring 16 and the movement imparted to the liquid column moves the piston 18 to open the relay valve 21 and to close an exhaust valve 27. Compressed air is now supplied from the receiver 3 to the operating piston 24 of the main valve 25, which is opened to allow compressed air from the receiver 4 to enter the arcing or blast chambers 6. The liquid conduit 17 is connected by way of a throttle valve 28 to a header tank 29, so as to make provision for variations in the volume of the liquid due to changes in ambient temperature, and the valve 28 may be so dimensioned or adjusted that the blast valve 25 is reclosed automatically after a short time as a spring 23 returns the valve 21 and the piston 18 to their initial positions, the liquid leaking through the valve 28, without the return of the piston 14. Otherwise, the blast valve 25 is reclosed when the coil 9 is deenergized so as to close the valve 11 and to open the valve 33 to vent the cylinder 12 to atmosphere.
