Abstract

700,895. Air-blast switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN SOC. ANON. Feb. 26, 1952 [April 4, 1951], No. 4985/52. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXIX] In a valve arrangement to control the admission of the air blast to an air-blast circuit-breaker for arc extinction and compressed air to the operating motor of the isolator of the circuit-breaker in timed relationship, a trip coil 16 is energized to open a pilot valve 15. Compressed air then flows from an auxiliary reservoir 13, through a pipe 11, a channel 28 in a slide-valve 8, and a port 20 into a cylinder 5. A piston 4 is then forced down to open the main blast valve 2 and compressed air flows from a main reservoir 1 through pipe 3 to the arc-extinguishing chambers of the circuit-breaker (not shown). When the piston 4 has moved through a distance sufficient to ensure an adequate supply of air for arc-extinction, it uncovers a port 27 and compressed air flows from the cylinder 5 into a passage 24 in the valve 8. The pressure acting on the valve 8 initiates its movement to the left against the bias of a spring 9 and as soon as a channel 29 comes into partial alignment with the pipe 11, compressed air flows directly into the passage 24 from the auxiliary reservoir 13. This compressed air flows through the pipe 10 to the motor of the isolating switch (not shown) and forces the valve 8 to complete its travel to the left, where the channel 29 is in full alignment with the pipe 11 and the channel 28 is in alignment with ports 19, 21, through which, the cylinder 5 is vented to atmosphere. The pressure in the reservoir 1 closes the valve 2 and restores the piston 4, the air blast ceasing. When the isolating switch has completed its opening movement, it operates a limit switch (not shown) to open the circuit of the coil 16. The valve 15 closes and the spring 9 returns the valve 8 to its original position, the supply to the motor of the isolator ceasing.
