Abstract

667,636. Percussive drills. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. March 9, 1950 [April 29, 1949], No. 5985/50. Class 124. In the back head of a percussive drill having a throttle valve and an air reservoir, a passage is provided from the reservoir to a tube leading to the working end of the drill, passageways lead from a water supply to this tube, and there is provided two sets of plugs, one to allow the drill to operate dry, and the other for wet operation. As shown, air is led from a throttle valve 17 to a reservoir 42 which is connected by passages 54, 55 and 57 to a central tube 62 leading to the drill end. A water supply may be connected to a threaded bore 63 and the water may pass by way of passages 65, 68 and 67 to the tube 62. When operating as a wet drill, a plug 75 prevents air passing through the passage 55. The throttle valve 17 may be used as a watercontrol valve by the action of a cam 86 on its stem on the stem of a valve inserted in a sleeve 77 in the passage 68. A spring-loaded pawl 47 may engage a ratchet on the throttle valve to maintain it in a particular position.
