Abstract
793,925. Boring earth. STENUICK, A. April 5, 1955 [Dec. 28, 1954], No. 19483/57. Divided out of 9951/55. Class 85 A percussive drill head comprises a cylinder 25, a bit 27 protruding from. the cylindei and adapted to bore a hole of greater diameter than the cylinder, a free piston 28 reciprocable in the cylinder to deliver blows to the bit, an air inlet 26 leading to the cylinder, a distributer valve member 38 directing air from the inlet to either side of the piston to cause it to reciprocate, a conduit 36 leading from the cylinder tc discharge air adjacent the bit, and a check valve member 59 near the inlet. The valve member 59 is urged by a spring 58 to close the inlet 26 when supply of air to the drill head is cut off, and retains air in the cylinder 25 and conduit 36 so that water from the formation being drilled does not enter the drill head. The invention is applied to the rotary percussive drill disclosed in Specification 714,663.
