660,816. Rotary percussive drills. STEVENS, A. H. (Timken Roller Bearing Co.). Nov. 17, 1948, No. 29913/48. Class 124 A rotary percussive drill rod has an axial bore and is threaded into a cutter having an axial bore in which is accommodated a cylindrical pilot bit the head of which abuts the rod and the lower cutting end of which extends beyond the cutting edges of the cutter. As shown, a rod A has an axial bore 3 and has fixed to it by threads a cutter B with cutting edges 6. A cylindrical pilot bit C, having two diametrically opposite grooves 11 and a groove 12 on its head, is located in a bore 4 in the cutter. The head of the pilot bit abuts the end of the rod A. In one modification the cutter has a chamber formed below the threaded portion and connected to the periphery by a bore to supply fluid behind the cutting edges. In other modifications a pilot bit with an axial passage way is a force fit in, or is formed integrally with, the end of the drill rod.
