Abstract

946,677. Percussive drills. HALIFAX TOOL CO. Ltd. June 29, 1961 [July 7, 1960], No. 23813/60. Heading B4C. [Also in Division E1] In a " down the hole " pneumatic percussive drill a valve by-passes the air supply to the distributer valve controlling reciprocation of the bit when the bit is out of contact with the earth. A drill according to Specification 946,678 has a cylinder 1. The distributer valve 7 is mounted in a valve chest 8 and controls ports 9, 10 supplying the lower part of the cylinder and port 11 supplying the upper part of the cylinder. The cylinder is slidable on a shock-absorber piston 13 having ports 15 for the supply of air to the cylinder and mounted on the end of the drill tube 19. At its lower end the piston has a plunger 30 filling a by-pass bore 34 in the chest when the bit contacts the earth. When the bit moves out of contact with the earth the plunger withdraws from the bore and most of the air passes into the top of the cylinder to hold the bit impacting piston (not shown) down whilst the rest of the air flows through ports 10 and passages 24 to the bit to evacuate any debris.
