Abstract
938,248. Boring earth &c. ATLAS COPCO A.B. April 10, 1962 [April 15, 1961], No. 13853/62. Class 85. [Also in Group XXIII] A connector for supplying drilling fluid to a tool mounted at the end of a hollow drill string comprises a body 3 having a passage 10 for the fluid, a non-return valve 21 in the passage, a duct 8 for supplying the fluid to the passage, and a non-return valve 13 in the duct. The fluid is air or water or a mixture of both. For rotary well drilling the connector has a sleeve 5 rotatably mounted on the body, an opening 6 in the sleeve being connected to the duct by an annular groove 7. A tongs 40 is adapted to be fixed to the sleeve so that a hose pipe 56 may deliver water through the opening and duct to the passage. A connector is fixed to the top of a drill pipe section 1, tongs are fixed to the connector, fluid is supplied by the hose pipe to the bore 11 of the pipe section whilst drilling proceeds, a pipe section 32 is added to the connector, when the hole has been extended sufficiently, a second connector (not shown) is added to the section 32, a second tongs is fixed to the second connector, fluid is supplied to the second connector, and the first tongs is removed, this process being repeated to ensure a continuous supply of the fluid to the tool during drilling. The invention may also be applied to a downthe-hole drill to supply it with drilling and operating fluid, or to a percussive drill using coupled drill pipes.
