Abstract
1,075,435. Boring earth &c. WALKERNEER MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Sept. 27, 1965, No. 41087/65. Heading E1F. In rotary drilling apparatus a drill string section comprises inner and outer pipes 8, 7 and the ends of the inner pipe are adapted to form with the adjacent ends of adjoining pipes telescopic joints which permit limit axial movement of the adjacent ends. Drilling mud is forced down the annulus between the pipes to a core bit (3) and returns to the surface, together with lengths of core C separated by a breaker (27), through the interior of the pipes 8. The bit comprises rollers (24 Fig. 2A) and cutters (28) fed with mud by passages (25) and nozzles (30). The annulus outside the string may be filled with drilling mud, and the upper part of this mud may be replaced by a fluid heavier than the mud, the pressure of the fluid being maintained constant during drilling. A kill line (41) is provided. The string is supported by a travelling block 47, and is rotated by motor 70 mounted on a platform 45 engaging guides (49 Fig. 1) in the derrick. In a modified apparatus (Fig. 6, not shown) adapted to use air, engine exhaust gas, or gas from another well as the drilling fluid, the nozzles (300) are directed upwardly to assist in the removal through the kill line of gas or water encroaching into the well.
