Abstract

1376094 Boring earth &c ATLAS COPCO AB 12 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6773/73 Heading E1F In a method of drilling wherein particles produced during drilling are removed by a flushing medium, e.g. foam, via a trailing non- rotary casing 16, an annular gap 30 of predetermined and substantially constant width is maintained between the mouth of the casing and the drilling tool to sift the flushing medium and prevent oversized drilling particles from entering the casing. Flushing medium enters the drilling tool via a passage 24. The drilling tool is maintained coaxial with the casing by means of helical ribs 32, 33, on a coupling sleeve 28 threadably mounted on drill shift 27, but alternatively the tool may be provided with a cylindrical portion (56), Fig. 8 (not shown), which slidably engages the interior surface of the casing and is provided with bores (59) therethrough for the passage of flushing medium and sifted particles. The drilling tool comprises a drill bit 21, an eccentrically-mounted reamer 22 and a cylindrical body 25. The reamer 22 is mounted for rotation through 180‹ relatively to the drill bit 21 between extended and retracted (Fig. 8 not shown) positions. The drilling tool is rotated by means of a motor 7, Fig. 1 (not shown). In addition an impact motor (6) may be provided, or a vibration generator (43), Fig. 2 (not shown), and/or a down-the-hole drill (45) driven by the flushing medium.
