Abstract

<PICT:0667277/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0667277/IV (c)/2> Liquid is applied to a web by conducting the web above a supply of liquid but through a mass of bubbles formed on the surface thereof which burst and deposit liquid on the web. The web may be of paper, metal, wood, plastic, or woven, knitted or netted fibres and the applied liquid may be a dye. A web 8, Fig. 1, of loose unspun fibrous material is taken from a reel 6 and attenuated between two pairs of drafting rollers 11, 12 and 14, 15, being supported therebetween by an endless belt 10. The web is passed over a trough of liquid 22, which is maintained at a constant level, and through a mass of bubbles 38 formed on the surface thereon by passing a stream of gas, e.g. air upwardly through the liquid from a pipe 26. The web then passes between a pair of cylinders 18 and 19 one or both of which may be heated. A water jacket 30 may be provided to prevent the heat from the cylinder 18 being conducted to the liquid 22. The web is wound up at 20. Pressure and a doctoring action may be applied to the web as it passes over cylinder 18 by a number of steel balls 50, maintained within a frame 40 supported above the web. These balls also exert a doctoring action upon both of the cylinders 18 and 19. The cylinder 18 may be rotated so that its peripheral speed exceeds that of the web so that the impregnated web will not adhere to its surface. The speed of the web is determined by drafting rollers 14, 15, the lower of which, 15, is power-driven and the upper of which, 14, is geared thereto and rests upon the web under its own weight. The rollers 11 and 12 are similarly operated. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 11, a single cylinder 18 is employed in cooperation with a heating shoe 60 between which and the cylinder the web passes. To ensure stripping of the web from the cylinder the latter is driven from 1 to 5 per cent faster.
