667,019. Variable-pitch propellers. WEBSTER, G. W. April 26, 1950 [Feb. 18, 1949], No, 4454/49. Class 114. In a propeller or wind motor comprising blades each mounted on a radial shaft 1 journalled in a hollow boss 3 fixed to a power output shaft 4 having on its surface at least one helical groove 6, each radial shaft projecting into the boss and carrying a gear wheel 12 meshing with a toothed ring 11 co-axial with and rotatable around the shaft 4, a sleeve 8 slidable on the shaft 4 and engaging the helical groove 6 has radial projections 9 engaging rods 10 projecting from the ring 11 parallel to the shaft 4. The power output shaft 4 has slidable therein a control rod 13 connected at one end to a transverse pin 14 fixed to the sleeve 8 and at the other end to a governor. The sleeve 8 is urged towards the ring 11 by a spring. 20. The governor may be a centrifugal governor, as shown at 16, or, where the power output shaft is connected to a dynamo, it may include a solenoid. Since pins 7 in the sleeve 8 are in engagement with the groove 6, movement of the rod 13 to slide the sleeve against the action of the spring 20 causes the sleeve to rotate and this rotation is transmitted through the projections 9 and rods 10 to the ring 11 which rotates the gear wheels 12 to alter the pitch of the blades.
