608,964. Variable-pitch propellers. WERKSPOOR N. V. Oct. 25, 1945, No. 28169. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1942. [Class 114] In mechanism for adjusting the blades of a propeller by means of a rod, within the propeller shaft and parallel to the axis thereof, adapted to be displaced axially by transmission gear actuated by an independent motor or by the shaft itself, the transmission gear is supported by the propeller shaft. The propeller-shaft 1 houses a pitch-adjusting rod 2, having a threaded end 3 on which is mounted a nut 4 held against axial displacement relative to the shaft 1. The nut 4 carries a toothed wheel 5 engaging a pinion 9 on a shaft 10 connected by worm-gearing 11 and a mitre wheel 12 to a mitre wheel 13 on a sleeve 14, rotatable about a tunnel shaft 8 and carrying the rotor 15 of an electric motor. The stator 16 of the motor is mounted in a housing 17 which is secured to the tunnel shaft 8 and supports the gearing 9... 13. On supplying current to slip-rings 18 on the stator 16, relative motion between the stator and the rotor 15 rotates the pinion 5 to move the adjusting rod 2 axially. An external indicator, actuated by the relative positions of a disc 41 on the propeller shaft 1 and a disc 40 rotated by the shaft 10 may show the set of the blades. Alternatively, the motor may be replaced by sleeves 24, 27, Fig. 2, rotated in opposite directions about the tunnel shaft 8 and adapted to be selectively braked to rotate the pinion 5. In another form, the rod 2 projects into a gap between the engine and tunnel shafts to rock a lever actuating an indicator and the transmission gear is disposed in the driven pinion of the propeller shaft.
