Abstract
666,834. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., ROXBURGH, A., and LEIGH, A. Dec. 21, 1949. No. 32736/49. Class 38 (v). The interrupter head of a gas-blast circuitbreaker comprises a conducting tube 3 in two parts 3a, 3b jointed at 7 and supported by a conducting collar 8 within a two-part insulating casing 4, 5, the whole assembly being carried by a column insulator 11. Contact fingers 14, 18, constructed as disclosed in Specification 583,346, are spring-biassed to engage a retractable isolator rod 1 and the remote tube end, respectively, outward movement of the finger 14 being limited by an insulating collar 17. Connecting rods 22 are pivoted to the fingers 18 and to abutments 23 slidable in sleeves 24 on the contact head 2, a resistance R being connected between the head 2 and collar 8. In operation, pressure-gas flows into the annular space 6 around the tube 3 whereby the contact fingers 14, 18 disengage the rod 1 and tube 3, the gas exhausting through ports 28 and a passage 27 in the collar 8, and through passages 30 in the contact head 2. The arc formed at contacts 18 is shunted by the resistance Rand the resistance-limited current broken at the contacts 14, rod 1 being then retracted to form an isolating break. A non-linear resistance may be connected between the tube 3 and a contact having sliding engagement with the rod 1 to facilitate extinction of the arc at contacts 14, and any arc formed when the rod 1 leaves the sliding contact is limited by both resistances in series and extinguished by the blast through the throat member 13. The column insulator 11 is supported by arms 33 on the gas reservoir 31, and the isolator contact 1 slides within a contact 34 supported by a further insulator 35 on the tank 31, terminal connectors 37 being provided on the contact 34 and contact head 2. The rod 1 is operated by an insulating arm 38 through a linkage 40, 41 and cylinder 42. A three-phase arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises three units as shown in Fig. 2 mounted side-by-side on a common tank 31.
