Abstract
666,773. Measuring liquids by volume. GOODLAD, T. W. Aug. 26, 1949 [Aug. 26, 1948], No. 225457/48. Class 106(v) Also in Groups XXIX and XXXIV]. Liquid dispensing apparatus, particularly for supplying upper cylinder lubricant to the induction manifold of an internalcombustion engine, comprises a tank 4 of lubricant connected through a measuring chamber 9a and a compartment 9 to the engine manifold. A solenoid - operated valve 12 controls communication between the chamber and compartment and a non-return valve 37 in the outlet of the compartment is opened by suction in the manifold. A needle valve 38 is adjustable to set the rate of flow of the lubricant. The solenoid plunger 14 is connected to the hollow valve stem 13, which has vents 41 to prevent air locks in the measuring chamber, and the winding 16 is in circuit with the car ignition switch. A second valve 39 mounted on the stem 13 connects the tank and chamber when the solenoid is de-energised and the valve 12 is closed, and vice-versa, thus, when the solenoid is energised and the engine is running, a fixed quantity of lubricant is delivered. The plunger may be so adjusted by a screw 17 that the valve 39 does not close completely when the solenoid is energised, whereby a slight flow of lubricant is permitted after the measured quantity has been delivered.
