Abstract
A rocket-like body is propelled by a reaction jet produced by burning fuel with atmospheric air and a nitro-aliphatic oxidant. The oxidant decomposes at a relatively low temperature and provides nascent oxygen which accelerates the combustion of the fuel with the atmospheric air. The fuel may be made up of one or more members of the paraffin hydrocarbon series and preferably will comprise either kerosene or gasoline. Nitro-aliphatic oxidants mentioned are nitromethane, tetranitromethane, nitroethane, hexanitroethane, 1-nitropropane, 2-nitropropane, 1, 1-dinitropropane, 2, 2-dinitropropane, 1, 2-dinitropropane, 1, 3-dinitropropane, 1, 1-dinitroethane, 1, 1, 1-trinitropropane, and 1, 2, 3-trinitropropane. Fuel and oxidant are mixed prior to being injected into the combustion chamber of a ram-jet tube. The mixture is varied with altitude by pressure-responsive devices which reduce the feed of fuel and increase the feed of oxidant as the altitude increases.
