No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUILLAUME VVnBnn, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Hayange, Moselle, in the Republic of France,
5 have invented new and useful Improvements in Explosives Having Liquid Air as a Base (for which I have filed an application in Germany March 141, 1916, and in France April 10, 1919), of which the following is a 10 specification.
This invention relates to an explosive having a high power and producing but a small amount of smoke, which is obtained by the use of liquid air or oxygen, an organic body 15 and silicide of calcium. For the organic body, a substance is preferably used which contains but a small proportion of carbon, on the contrary'to the use of other substances such as soot, charcoal or the like. Wood flour,
2O cork flour, saw dust and like material are very suitable for the preparation of a mixture containing silicide of calcium, this latter being employed in greater or. less proportion according as it is desired to obtain an ex- 25 plosive of greater or less force. The addition of the silicide of calcium will still further reduce the proportion of carbon in the explosive mixture.
Application filed August 25, 1921.
Serial No. 495,319.
The silicide of carbon and the organic body, preferably mixed together, are introduced into a cartridge of pasteboard or paper which is then immersed in a vessel containingliquid air wherein it is caused to remain until completely saturated with liquid air.
Cartridges thus prepared are applicable to tunnel construction and for use in badly aired galleries, in which case it is desirable to secure a high explosive force but without production of noxious gases.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An explosive composed of liquid air, silicide of calcium and a combustible organic substance.
2. An explosive composed of liquid air, silicide of calcium and a combustible organic substance, both latter substances being mixed together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GUILLAUME WEBER.

ZUERSTO, RENE HEBERLE.
