Abstract
Preheated air at 200-300 degrees C is mixed with 2-5% propane gas and burned in a catalyst chamber, pref. using a platinum catalyst. The ensuing gases are then burned in a second catalyst chamber also supplied with propane. By measuring the O2 content of the processed gas, and using suitable control equipment, the amount of propane supplied to the two chambers can be regulated. The resultant mixture of N2 water vapour and CO2 is then passed through a condenser to extract the water and the CO2 is removed by a separator of the molecular-sieve variety which can be regenerated by hot air. A relatively small installation produces nitrogen of 98 to 99.5% purity which can immediately be used as an inert gas, e.g. for the storage of explosive gas. As the equipment works far from the inflammability limit, it can be used safely on land or at sea.
