Abstract

694,373. Igniters for liquid fuel combustion equipment. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. July 16,1951 [Sept. 8, 7950], No.. 22157/50.. Class 75(iii) Ignition equipment 8 for the combustion equipment 10 of a rocket motor adapted to burn a mixture of liquid fuel; for instance methyl alcohol admixed with water, and oxidizer, for instance liquid oxygen or nitric acid, comprises a chamber 9 in which a portion of the fuel and oxidizer are combined and which is surrounded by a cooling jacket 19 through which a portion of the liquid fuel is passed to be sprayed from an outlet formed between the wall of the chamber 9 and a surrounding nozzle piece 19b coaxial with the chamber outlet 11 so as to burn in the burning mixture. The chamber 9 is formed as a steel shell which is cylindrical for about half its length and is then connected by a frustoconical part 18 to the cylindrical outlet 11. The jacket comprises a cylindrical part 19a to which the nozzle 19b is connected by a sleeve 19c, the jacket and shell being spaced by helical ridges 27 and by circular ridges 28 ... 30 having oblique grooves. Fuel and oxidizer are sprayed through orifices 22 in the jacket to meet near the entrance end of the chamber adjacent to a sparking plug inserted through a hole 24 in the equipment and fuel is led to the space 26 between chamber and jacket by a duct 25 in the jacket. The ignition charnber 9 communicates with the main chamber 10 of the combustion equipment so that the flame from the outlet 11 meets the main jets of liquid fuel and oxidizer from the main spray device 15. The ignition. equipment 8 is supplied with 3 per cent to 5 per cent of the fuel to the combustion equipment 10 and two parts of this fuel are fed to the jacket and one part to the chamber 9.
