Abstract

665,911. Punching. PARNALL (YATE), Ltd. June 27, 1949 [June 8, 1948], No. 15439/48. Class 83 (iv). Punches.-In apparatus for punching holes in tubes for gas burners &c. the tube is positioned on a recessed block 1 mounted on a carriage 6. A multiple punch unit 8 is supported in a frame 9 spring- mounted on pillars 11 and carries grooves on the underside which co-operate with similar grooves on the block 1 to engage transverse parts of the tube. To effect the punching in two stages one half of the holes are punched in a first operation and the work-holder is then moved and the rest of the holes are punched. The punch head 26 and the punch carrier are connected by a positioning device comprising a member 28 pivoted to the head 26 and cams 30, 31 on the frame of the punch carrier which co-operate with a roller 33 on a lever 29 journalled in the member 28. The punch head 26 carries spring-mounted pads 27 which on the descent of the head contact and depress frame members to clamp the tube. The roller 33 engages the cam 30 to push the punch unit 8 to a side position and a pilot bar 37 engages an aperture 36 in the carriage 6 to hold it in position. The punch unit comprises punches 15 slidable in sleeves 16 positioned by springs 19, 20. The punches are held normally retracted within the sleeve 16 but light pressure on the punch projects the sleeve 16 to straddle and hold the tube. Further lowering of the punch head through a plate 25 comprises the springs 19, 20 and effects the first punching operation. The head is raised and the roller 33 closes the cam. On the next descent the roller 33 engages the cam 31 and the punch carrier is moved to the other extreme position and the second punching operation is effected.
