A method for producing reinforced apertures in paper and the like using adhesive tape, comprises drawing the tape intermittently under a mechanism for cutting-out and perforating a portion or portions from the tape, and, when the tape is stationary, operating said mechanism while maintaining the tape under tension, then drawing unspent tape into the mechanism ready for the next cutting-out operation and finally applying the cut-out .portions to the material to be reinforced. As shown in Fig. 2, a machine for producing a pair of reinforced apertures in paper comprises a shaft 27 for supporting a roll of tape 30, cutting and punching mechanism housed within cylinders 3 and a shaft 17 carrying a roll 29 of used tape. Downward motion of a handle 20, pivoted at 21, causes a pawl on the end of the handle to engage a tooth in a ratchet-wheel 16 and to rotate the roll 29 so as to bring an unused portion of tape beneath the cutters. As the handle is moved down, a pin 10 thereon engages and moves a plunger 2 sliding within each cylinder 3, Fig. 3, each plunger 2 having an extension 2a, the motion being transmitted through spring 8 to a circular cutter 4 which co-operates with an aperture 51 in a die-plate 13 and into a circular portion from the tape 30. Further movement of the cutter 4 is prevented by shoulder 11 formed on the cylinder 3, spring 7 then acting on an annular applier 5, which, with continuing downward movement of the plunger, presses the circular cut-out portion of tape on to a sheet of paper 50 lying on the base 1 of the machine and beneath the die-plate, the applier then being arrested by the base-plate and the central stem 2a of the plunger then co-operating with an aperture 31 in the baseplate to punch a hole in the paper 50 and the reinforcing portion. The handle 20 is finally released and all parts restored to their normal positions.
