Abstract
665,819. Automatic exchanges. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 26, 1947 [Oct. 3, 1946], No. 29547/46. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Groups XL (b) and XL (c)] Pulse distributer circuits comprising cold cathode gas-filled sequence electric discharge tubes as described in Specification 639,827. [Group XL (a)], can be used in place of the cathode-ray tube distributers in the automatic exchange system described in Specification 632,375. The sequence tube 1 fires under the control of a master pulse generator 45 synchronized with the pulses in the bus-bar 46. Each cathode of the tube is connected via a transformer 20 to a gate circuit 23 which is connected through a condenser 34 to the busbar and through a low-pass filter 32 to output terminals 36. The gate circuit comprises a rectifier 27 biased to cut-off by a battery 31. The positive pulses from the bus-bar are of insufficient amplitude to open the rectifier in any gate circuit except when aided by a pulse from the associated tube gap. It is arranged that the pulse from a cathode slightly leads the corresponding bus-bar pulse and that the pulse overlap terminates with the tube pulse. The bus-bar pulse may be modulated in time or duration, but the tube pulse has constant timing, so that the period during which the rectifier is open commences at the varying time of the bus-bar pulse and ends with the constant trailing edge of the tube pulse, and a pulse flows in the rectifier circuit modulated in conformity with the bus-bar pulse modulation. Condenser 29 and low-pass filter 32 suppress high-frequency components and harmonics so that the output at terminals 36 contains substantially the modulating frequency only. In a modified circuit, a transformer is included in series in the rectifier circuit and its secondary connected to the bus-bar, the original bus-bar connection consisting of condenser 34 and resistance 35 being diverted to a pulseshaper which modifies the pulses of the master pulse generator to saw-tooth waveform before they are applied to the gate circuit. Various channels connected to terminals 36 of the various gate circuits are thus enabled to modulate an individual pulse in pulse trains applied to the bus-bar.
